Poetry on the Plains

  • LHUCA Icehouse 511 Avenue K Lubbock, TX, 79401 United States (map)

Poetry, like fiction, drama, and painting, captures the ephemerality of a moment, the intensity of an emotion, the complexity of a thought, the beauty of an image, the exquisiteness of the sublime, and the musicality and movement of language. It offers to readers and writers alike a glimpse into the depths and passion of the human spirit while helping us to seek out, explore, and express truths of the human condition through humor, poignancy, irony, curiosity, introspection, at times clarity, and still at others, through opacity and mystery. There is poetry in a West Texas sunset, in vast fields of fluffy cotton, in the rock and roll of Buddy Holly and the Crickets, in the Spanish architecture of the Texas Tech campus, in the earth that reddens our sky, and in all facets of daily life across the South Plains. The goal of Poetry on the Plains is to engage with and make poetry more accessible to the Lubbock community as we navigate life on the South Plains together. Through readings from local poets, students at Texas Tech University, and members of the Lubbock community, we will explore how poetry touches and permeates each of our lives. We encourage and welcome open discussion of poetry and hope that this event and this group will open the doors of poetry writing and reading to everyone in our community!

If you have nay questions, please email our group co-founder and event host, Jennifer McSpadden, at Jennifer.McSpadden@ttu.edu.
