LHUCA Galleries are open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m.- 5 p.m.
Admission is always free and viewers of all ages are welcome!

History of LHUCA

How it started...

LHUCA began as the Lubbock Regional Arts Center (LRAC) in 1997. The City of Lubbock deeded the vacant Fire Department Administration Building to LRAC in 2000, in alignment with its goal to create an arts and entertainment district in the downtown area. A capital campaign was launched, and the facility was enlarged and renovated between 2003 and 2005. LRAC was renamed the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts in honor of our late co-founder in 2004.

Today

Today, LHUCA is recognized as a driving force behind the downtown revitalization plan using the arts to stimulate economic development. Creating this visual and performing arts center in the heart of the future Lubbock Cultural District helped foster a thriving arts community. LHUCA is the manager of the First Friday Art Trail, a self-guided art event through Lubbock's Cultural District that brings in 5,000 plus visitors each month. The center also partners with numerous departments at Texas Tech University, local nonprofits, and local K-12 programs. In 2023, nearly 75,000 people benefit from our programs and services.

Facilities

LHUCA’s main building houses four art gallery spaces that host over 20 exhibitions annually featuring regional, national, and international artists. Concerts, dance, theatrical and film programs are held in our 160-seat Firehouse Theatre. Our Clay Studio has the best equipped community facilities in the region. In addition, the campus contains the multipurpose Christine DeVitt Icehouse, the Graffiti Education Building, and an outdoor plaza with stage. The plaza amenities were constructed through a $100,000 grant from Texas Commission on the Arts that was matched by corporate and individual donations. Accessibility Statement

As a core value, LHUCA believes that arts should be accessible, embracing, and reflective of all in our community. LHUCA’s facilities offers a number of on-site accommodations for guests with disabilities in order to assure an enjoyable and engaging experience. If you have questions about specific programs or accessibility needs, please contact us.

Mobility

A wheelchair is available on a first-come, first-served basis at no cost and is located at front desk in the galleries. Personal wheelchairs, walkers, canes with rubber tips, and motorized mobility devices are also permitted in all LHUCA facilities.

Sign Language Interpretation

Sign Language interpretation for all programs and tours is offered upon request with advanced notice based on availability.

Service Animals

Service animals are welcome in all LHUCA spaces. LHUCA abides by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and allows service animals, that is, animals trained to do work or perform specific tasks for the benefit of an individual with disabilities, into all the public areas of the museum. The ADA does not currently recognize emotional support animals, therefore emotional support animals and all other animals not specifically covered in the American with Disabilities Act will not be permitted within LHUCA’s buildings. Other leashed pets must remain outside the buildings.

Lighting

Because LHUCA’s galleries have many large windows that admit daylight, the light levels in the galleries can vary considerably. Guests with light sensitivity may choose to visit on cloudy days or during evening open hours when these contrasts are not so pronounced. When there are exhibitions featuring artworks with flashing lights, signage notifying visitors will be available.
